Capitol Hill Day

Athlete Cole Shiers from Gorham, & his sister Jordan, met with Senator Snowe.

Jordan & Cole Shiers w/ Tim Shriver
On January 27, 2010 Special Olympics and
Best Buddies International, along with support from Joe Jonas and Carl Lewis, ascended upon Capitol Hill to advocate support for the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Act. Right beside them were Special Olympics Maine athlete Cole Shiers from Gorham, his sister and Youth Advocate
for Special Olympics Maine Jordan Shiers,
and long time volunteer Christine Geelhoed

The legislation will help continue the legacy of Mrs. Shriver by authorizing funds for specific programs supporting persons with intellectual disabilities in health, education and global program initiatives.

The day started with Joe Jonas and Carl Lewis conducting a morning fun run with Special Olympics athletes and Best Buddies participants. For the remainder of the day our Maine delegation, along with Special Olympics and Best Buddies representatives from around the country, met with each states representatives to discuss and ask for their support of the EKS ACT. Cole, Jordan and Christine were given the opportunity to meet with Senators Snowe and Collins and Congressman Michael Michaud and Congresswoman Chellie Pingree.
